South of Surrender is the 3rd
book in the Hearts of the Anemoi series by Laura Kaye. This one
centers around Crysander, the God of the South Wind. He is fighting
with his brother at the beginning of the book, which leads to him
being wounded and crashing down onto Laney's land.
Laney is an amazing woman who is nearly
blind. I loved that Laura wrote about an impaired heroine. She lives
alone and tends to the horses in the horse farm that she inherited. I
couldn't imagine not having my sight. Laney is able to take care of
herself and the horse farm by counting how many steps it takes to get
from point A to point B. She doesn't give up and doesn't live in self
pity. When Crysander falls through her barn, she's able to tend to
him despite her lack of vision.
Crysander is seen as a bit of a player.
He doesn't like to get emotionally attached and doesn't like to be
touched. Laney's beauty, both inside and out, makes him feel things
that are unfamiliar to him. She is such a compassionate and selfless
person. Despite her blindness, and the fact that he is a God, she
wants to protect him – and she saves him more than once.
Crysander's connection to Laney puts her in danger from his evil
brother Eurus, so he spends a lot of time with her to protect her.
Yet, he also tries to push her away emotionally because he doesn't
want her pulled too deep into the family drama.
The passion in this book is sizzling. I
haven't quite read all of her books, but I think that that South of
Surrender has the hottest love scenes that I've read from Laura Kaye.
When you're not blushing from reading these scenes, you'll be glued
to the book from the action of the other scenes. There's a lot of
emotion in this book as well. There is one particularly sad part that
shocked me. It was heartbreaking. All around though, this is a great
love story. I was very happy to see characters from other books make
an appearance in this one. I'm not sure who the next book will be
about but I'm really looking forward to it.
